SA Racer Brad Binder Scores Points With Mahindra

Promising 18-year-old South African Moto3tm rider Brad Binder is enjoying new found competiveness in the Moto3 class since switching to the Mahindra MGP3O motorcycle. His Luxembourg-based team, Ambrogio Racing, was the first customer to purchase Mahindra Racing motorcycles, following an impressive showing by the MGP3O in its debut season. Mahindra is the first and only Indian constructor competing in the hotly contested Moto3 World Championship.

At the 13th round, staged in Aragon, Spain (on 29 September), the two Mahindra factory riders, Miguel Oliveira, from Portugal, and Efren Vazquez, of Spain, finished 5th and 10th respectively, with Brad Binder scoring championship points with a 12th place after starting the race from 14th on the grid.

These point-scoring performances have taken Mahindra Racing to third in the Moto3 constructors’ standings.

This follows Mahindra Racing taking its second consecutive constructors’ title in the 2013 Italian championship. Team riders Andrea Locatelli (16) and Michael Rinaldi (17) also wrapped up the Italian Moto3 (250cc four-stroke) season by taking the top two positions in the riders’ standings. In 2012, Mahindra won the Italian 125cc constructers’ championship with two-stroke machines.

Mahindra Racing is one of a handful of entrants to have chosen to develop its own technology for the frame and engine to challenge the products of established racing factory teams. Mahindra is doing this in partnership with Suter Racing Technology of Switzerland.

The new Mahindra machine proved competitive from the outset with both its riders finishing in the top 10 in the opening round of the 2013 Moto3 title chase in Qatar. It has since started on the front row of the grid four times, been on pole once and set two lap records.

The strong performance by the Mahindra machines resulted in the Ambrogio team buying two of these MGP3O motorcycles for the last six races of the 2013 Moto3 championship for its riders, Brad Binder and German Luca Amato.

The Mahindra Moto3 motorcycles are designed and built at the company’s facility situated near Zurich in Switzerland. Moto3 regulations dictate that constructors must be prepared to supply up to 15 riders in the class and Mahindra Racing is gearing up for increased production in time for the 2014 season, as several teams are showing interest.

South African Brad Binder had this to say about the Mahindra MGP3O: “The new engine is great. It is wonderful to be able to open the throttle and have instant response. The bike handles very well and it is easy to ride hard through the bends.”

Binder, who has just turned 18, was born in Potchefstroom and now lives in Spain. He started his motor sport career in karting and switched to motorcycles in 2005. He graduated to competing in the Red Bull Rookies races at MotoGP events in 2010 and continued in this formula in 2011 when he also made his debut in the 125cc class of MotoGP racing at Indianapolis.

Last year, he entered the new Moto3 championship, but it seems the switch to Mahindra is giving his career a boost and he is looking forward to being increasingly competitive for the rest of this season and in 2014.

“The Mahindra race bike is excellent value as an overall package and it is great to be breaking new ground for an Indian constructor,” commented the CEO of Mahindra Racing, Mufaddal Choonia.

Mahindra has been concentrating its domestic two-wheeler production on scooters and has sold over 100,000 in India in 2012, but is now expanding its range with new motorcycle models as it aims for a larger share of the huge Indian two-wheeler market.
