Mahindra Displays Current And Future Models At Johannesburg Motor Show

Mahindra South Africa is displaying a range of its current and future models at the Johannesburg International Motor Show. The range includes the established Scorpio Pick-up, Xylo MPV, and XUV 500 SUV as well as the upcoming Quanto Compact SUV and Reva e2o electric hatchback which is a city car that could come to South Africa in the future.

Mahindra Reva e2o - a solution for Emission-Free driving

The Mahindra Group, a US$16.2-billion multinational federation based in Mumbai, India, which employs more than 155 000 people in over 100 countries, is applying its wide variety of skills to ensure its automotive division is at the leading edge in terms of technological developments.

This includes sustainability where emission-free electric power is seen as a practical solution for city motoring. An important step in bringing this strategy to fruition was the take-over of Reva a dedicated electric vehicle producer in India in 2010.

The acquisition of Reva has resulted in Mahindra marketing the Mahindra Reva e2o city car in India and this model has been brought to South Africa for display at the Johannesburg International Motor Show. The Mahindra Reva e2o is an example of Mahindra's forward thinking and the company has sold more than 5,000 electric cars in 26 countries worldwide.

Mahindra may consider marketing this car in South Africa in the future. This is dependent on the future announcement of the policy on electric vehicles.

The Mahindra Reva e2o is a two-door hatchback with seating for four adults. It is powered by a 3-phase induction motor which develops 19kW of power and 53Nm of torque with the energy source being a 48V maintenance-free battery. The transmission is automatic, so the car is very easy to drive, with its compact dimensions and a 3.9m turning circle making it easy to manoeuvre in city driving. Mahindra sees it as the Future of Mobility.

The Mahindra Reva e2o has a top speed of over 100km/h and a range of 160km on a full charge, which takes five hours from a standard 15A household socket. One hour of charging will provide a range of 20km. The car also features regenerative braking which reduces wear on the braking system while putting energy back into the battery as you drive.

The pre-coloured ABS body panels that cover the metal framework are dent resistant and since they are not painted it is very difficult to see any scratches on them.

The energy management system and 10 on-board computers provide real-time information to the driver. Self-diagnosis sends alerts in case of a fault being identified. The versatile infotainment system offers a host of media options to choose from and helps plan your daily trips with the built in satellite navigation system.

In case your Mahindra Reva e2o is low on energy you can use an app on your Smartphone to activate a reserve charge to get you going again. The apps can also lock and unlock the car and switch on the cooling system remotely.

Mahindra Quanto Compact SUV coming to SA soon

Mahindra will be entering the increasingly competitive compact SUV market within the next month with its very spacious Quanto, which is based on the Xylo platform. South Africa will be the first country outside India to market this new addition to the growing Mahindra range of SUVs.

Besides being exceptionally spacious the new model is powered by a 2.2-litre mHawk turbo diesel engine which develops 89kW of power and a class-leading 290Nm of torque. It also delivers outstanding fuel economy of 7.6l/100km on the combined test cycle.

It is the only vehicle in its class which has a separate chassis for added ruggedness. The Quanto has plenty of off-road credibility too with the highest ground clearance (200mm) of any of its rivals.

Mahindra sees it as an ideal lifestyle vehicle that makes "weekdays feel like weekends". Initially it will be offered in two-wheel, rear drive configuration, but a 4x4 version will be introduced in the future.

The Quanto is a five-seater in a 2+3 configuration with the rear seat having a divided backrest that can be folded to increase load versatility. The spare wheel is mounted on the tailgate so it does not take up any usable space inside the vehicle and it also gives the Quanto a definitive SUV appearance.

Standard equipment levels are generous and include air conditioning, a radio/CD audio system which is MP3 compatible, remote keyless entry, electrically adjustable mirrors and front and rear power windows.

Mahindra XUV 500

The Mahindra XUV 500 was launched in South Africa just prior to the 2011 Johannesburg International Motor Show and has proved one of the most popular models in the growing Mahindra product line-up being marketed in SA.

The high specification XUV range consists of two-and four-wheel drive derivatives all powered by a transversely-mounted, four-cylinder, 2,2-litre mHawk turbo diesel engine, which develops 103kW of power at 3 750r/min and 330Nm of torque between 1,600 - 2 800r/min.

The Micro Hybrid Stop-Start system cuts fuel consumption and emissions. It puts the engine in standby mode 2,5 seconds after selecting neutral at a traffic signal or in a traffic jam. The engine restarts automatically when you put your foot on the clutch.

The transmission is a six-speed manual, with a low ratio transfer box for the all-wheel drive model. The all-wheel drive system on the W8 AWD version has an interactive torque management system which switches seamlessly from front to all wheel drive.

The XUV 500 is a spacious seven-seater SUV of monocoque construction (no separate chassis frame) with an up-to-date mechanical specification and a high level of standard equipment. There is a choice of seven exterior body colours.

The model on show is fitted with a number of approved Mahindra accessories, including the Tubular Nudge Bar and Stainless Steel Side Rails.

For total peace of mind, XUV500 now comes standard with a 5-year/150 000km warranty and a 3-year/60 000km service plan.

Mahindra Scorpio

Two derivatives of the Scorpio Pik-Up will be on display - a single cab workhorse and an example of the new Scorpio Double-Cab Adventure Series 2 developed by Mahindra in conjunction with LA Sport. This new model has been introduced following successful sales of the original Adventure special edition.

The Scorpio Adventure Series 2 features a LA Sport-supplied steel canopy with a roof-mounted tent and a built-in drawer system, with all the accessories being finished in matt black to provide a distinctive appearance.

For total peace of mind, Scorpio Pik-Up Double cab now comes standard with a 5-year/150 000km powertrain warranty, 3-year/100 000 km standard warranty and a 3-year/60 000km service plan.

Mahindra Xylo

This versatile Xylo model E8 people-carrier not only sports a fresh new look but also reflects the bold styling of Mahindra's successful XUV 5OO. The substantial revisions to the exterior appearance continue to the interior, which have a premium feel with several new features. The model is very competitively priced and comes with a 3-year/60,000km service plan.

What strikes one on opening the doors are the sumptuous seats trimmed with genuine Italian leather. The sleek appearance of the new two-tone dashboard is enhanced with insets of glossy wood panels, while there is a neatly styled centre console and a host of storage spaces.

The second and third row seats fold flat for added versatility when loads have to be transported. They can even be used as a bed while on long journeys.

The vast improvements in this spacious vehicle extend to the standard features and equipment. There is a comprehensive Climate Control System with outlets for all three rows of seats, a 2-DIN audio system with controls on the steering wheel, foldable trays behind the first and second rows of seats, cruise control and Bluetooth connectivity which allow you to pair a cellphone and MP3 player with the audio system.

The Xylo is powered by the proven mHawk 2.2-litre diesel engine, which develops 89kW of power at 4 000r/min and delivers 290Nm of torque between 2 400-2 800 r/min. It is linked to a smooth-shifting five-speed manual gearbox.

Summing up:

"Our display at the 2013 Johannesburg International Motor Show gives a good indication of how Mahindra has extended its local range as well as giving a glimpse into the future with our Mahindra Reva e2o electric city car. Mahindra will be entering the increasingly competitive compact SUV market with our new Mahindra Quanto. From a customer's perspective we are excited about launching the new 5-year/150 000km warranty for XUV500 and the Scorpio Pik-Up Double cab." said the CEO of Mahindra SA, Ashok Thakur.
